Where does everyone get their fabrics?

Postby ImisMummy » Sat Dec 17, 2011 5:35 pm

I have had a look through the posts but cant seem to find what Im after. I want to make Imogen some more tshirt with some jersey/interlock. I found some bundles on Abakhan but want to get small amounts of individual prints as I will only be making 1 top at a time,

Where does everyone on here get al their lovely fabric from?

If its just a small amount you want, then you can get some from suzanne at lush tush. Otherwise I get mine from fabric co-ops

for interlock/jersey/rib prints I usually get mine from Nur for plain colour interlocks, sweatshirt fleece and polar/micro fleece I use http://www.tissufabrics.co.uk/fabric-store/

for neckbands and cuffs on t-shirts I prefer interlock as jersey and rib knits are too thin and tend to sag, for the main body of the t-shirt you can use any of them

I use interlock, rib knit and jersey. In saying that I prefer to use interlock because it is the thickest and easiest to work with. For underwear I can use the rib knit or jersey for the front panel, but I use an interlock for the back as being thicker it will keep it's shape better.
For the neckbands and cuffs I use ribbing. You can use interlock, but with the lycra in the ribbing you get a better finish.

I tend to purchase patterned interlock from the USA or from tissu
http://www.tissufabrics.co.uk/fabric-store/
Tissu also sells plain interlock, but there can be issues with the fabrics being colourfast. I have never had a problem with her patterned fabrics being colourfast. Her plains need to be washed separately and it can take 1 to 6 prewashes before the dye stops running.
Who I would suggest for plain interlock (and ribbing) is vend. Their fabric is more expensive, but it is softer and I have never had a problem with dye runs. Make sure you buy a cotton lycra ribbing (they use to sell a poly ribbing, but that is a lot thicker and doesn't feel as nice).

Alternatively for ribbing, there is this - it works well, but doesn't have as much stretch as the vend ribbing.

Also just beware of some of the sellers on ebay. There are a few that don't understand the difference between interlock, rib knit and jersey, so chat to them if you are unsure about their listings. There are also a number of ebay sellers that will send you a sample of their fabrics if you ask them so you can feel the fabric before you buy any.
