Sewing Soaker - Pure New Wool?

Postby CupcakeMummy » Sat Feb 25, 2012 9:36 pm

I'm excited to sew some up cycled wool soakers.

But can any wool sweater become one?

I got a roll-neck in my local RSPCA shop today. It's an M&S 100% pure new wool jumper.

It's machine washable but with wool wash.

Is this going to be OK to use and lanolise?

Thanks. Xxxx

Machine washable means that it is superwash wool. Superwash wool has been treated so is not good for lanolising. It would work un-lanolised as a one wear soaker like pul. Wear it for the daytime or night time & then wash before re-using.

I would guess that if the label says that it is machine washable then the wool is superwash wool. If that is the case, it will work as a soaker but you may find you need to lanolise it more often as the treated fibres don't take up the lanolin as well as untreated wool does.

Thanks ladies.

I will use it as a practice piece and as a one time use.

And my money went to a good cause as well. :)

As the others have said, if it is machine washable then it will not be as effective as non-treated wool, but it will still work well, you'll need to wash it more often but at least you'll be able to throw it in the machine! If you look out for handwash wool jumpers you can felt them before sewing.

Not all machine wash is superwash. If it says machine wash on a wool cycle at 30c then it's quite possibly fine!

What pattern are you using to make the soakers? :nosey:
