the theory runs thus: (though many mums have mixed spoon feeding - which is different to purees - with finger foods although techincallly that's not true blw)

With purees the baby is sucking the liquid off the spoon which goes straight to the back of the mouth - no jaw/tongue action is involved, then they swallow.

With finger foods if they do the same i.e. suck a lump to the back of the throat this could cause full on choking (rather than the gagging you sometimes get with BLW) does that make sense?

I think however if you start with BLW and then introduce spoon foods then the baby already knows what to do with food in its mouth so this is less likely to happen...

To me BLW is in part about being led by your baby and feeding them 'normal' foods and not being afraid to let them loose on feeding themselves from the start...

T eats messy foods off of a spoon (not that it results in less mess, but he just won't get his hands in there), we load it and let him pick it up. He loves weetabix, fromage frais, beans, soup and all kinds of other things from a spoon. We sometimes do it with breadsticks too as then he gets to chomp on them afterwards hehe ;)

Oh and he sort of bites the things off the spoon rather than just suck it iykwim.

It's not really that spoons are anti BLW, more that smooth purees are IYSWIM?

i am mixing.
spoon feeding 1 feed and blw the other.
not really bother if its 'pure blw' or not cos i think its a bit irrelevant!!!
breakfast is usually something spoon fed, with some cheerios or toast for her to had feed as well, and dinner with the boys is whatever they are eating infront of her. sometimes there is some spoon feeding too (eg spagetti bolanaisse, some bigger pastas in from of her and chopped up with more sauce me spoon feeding.
its working great for us whatever it is. Best of both worlds imo. if i go out i dont take mush with as i was used to doing with boys which is fantastic! just no need! she had fish and chips in a restaurant last week and the week before a falafel ball and a spring roll type thing filled with mashed potatoes. always together with whatever veg is to hand

my mum tried to palm off some vile baby food jars she had bought for my sister on me.
ICK! i opened one and smelled it. it smelled of watery nappy, so i put it straight in the bin! i found that when i did use mush, the only ones i would have eaten myself were the ellas kitchen, so there for e they were the only ones id feed to my child!!

Both girls love the fruitapura pure fruit puree but they both have the pouches rather than the pots :)

But standard baby food in jars - yak!
