Vegan/vegetarian mummies please help!

Postby beck » Sat Mar 13, 2010 4:48 am

We have decided to cut out all dairy in Williams diets but are worried about his calcium intake. He also cant have Soya. I've read about calicum fortified orange juice and that kind of thing but we are at abit of a loss. Oh and he's possible Gluten intolerant aswell.

Beck, you can get liquid calcium, it would be worth checking if William's old enough to have it.

Also, try not to worry too much, humans aren't actually supposed to have dairy after weaning so milk isn't essential, Shadow's list has some great alternative sources.

Hope you manage to find a diet that works for William :hug:

You don't need to worry about him getting enough calcium. Vegetables are a perfeclty good source of calcium and, as Frances says, humans aren't supposed to have dairy after weaning. In fact, too much calcium causes osteoporosis and there is a strong correlation between consuming dairy and rates of osteoporosis:

The dairy industry is a powerful marketing machine.

If you're looking for a milk substitute for cooking or on cereal you can buy Oat milk in most supermarkets and it has added calcium - the amount of calcium is very close to that in cows milk.

ETA just realised you're in Australia and they don't stock Oatly there. Bummer :(

I googled and found this recipe...

Oat milk

Ingredients
* 1 cup cooked oats (i use thick rolled)
* 4-5 cups hot water
* 1-2 teaspoon cornstarch
* 1 tablespoon sugar
* 1 dash nutmeg
* 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
* 1 pinch sea salt

Directions

1.(To cook steel cut or thick rolled oats, bring 1 cup of water to a boil in a small sauce pan, add 1/2 cup of oats and turn the heat down to med/low, they just want to gently simmer for about 10 minutes. Give it a stir to check to see if the oats have absorbed all of the water.).
2. Bring 5 cups of water to a boil.
3. As you are waiting for the water to boil, add the rest of the ingredients to a blender. As soon as your water is boiling add 3-4 cups to the blender. Be sure that there is room left in the top of the blender and that the lid fits securely or you could risk splashing yourself with hot water when you flip the switch.
4.Turn your blender on low and increase to high speed, blending for about 20 seconds or so. Check the consistency, add more water as necessary to achieve the desired thickness. The mixture will thicken a little as it cools off and eventually chills.
