Vinegar and fruit flies

Postby MaryMoon » Sun Aug 09, 2009 7:04 am

We have a problem with fruit flies in our house and read that you can use white vinegar in a bowl to help. So I have put a small bowl out this morning and they all seem to be congregating near by. Wonder if they will go in and die or the fumes knock them out? anyone know?

It is now Wednesday and there are now a few dead fruit flies in the vinegar. Not sure if it is because it is fluke or because it is vinegar :giggle:

Found this in my googling...

Make sure your choose right type of vinegar. White vinegar does not work. Malt vinegar and red wine work, just not as well. Beer sometimes works, too. Balsamic vinegar also works well. Wine works extremely well, and a wine bottle with an inch or so left can be used without an additional funnel.

Cut the top off a plastic bottle, turn it over and push it back into the base of the bottle.

Pour a small amount of the vinegar into the bottom along with a bit of water

Hey presto.. Instant fly trap that the flies crawl into to get at the lovely vinegar but can't get back out of.

Leave it somewhere the flies love to hang out. It will soon fill up.

More pungent fruity vinegars are better. It's just there to attract the flies.
