Vegetable Garden Planting

Postby gayleygoo » Thu Feb 18, 2010 3:11 pm

So who's planning to plant veggies etc this year? :)

We dont actually have any grass in our back garden, so container planting is pretty much all we'll be able to do. I'm hoping to be able to plant:

Cherry tomatoes (in hanging baskets)
Strawberries
French beans
Peas
Spaghetti squash (not ideal for containers, but they look fun!)
Lettuce (cut-and-come-again)
Maybe some peppers and cucumber, but we dont eat those much so Im not sure...

Despite my planning, Ive actually got "black" thumbs and most stuff I plant tends to die, get eaten, or simply refuse to grow at all. And having a new baby isnt going to make it any easier, but if I can get a side salad out of what I sow then I will count that as some sort of success...

Also, I very much doubt that Im going to be able to use all the seeds in the packets that I buy, so perhaps some of you might be interested in seed swapping?

I will be planning to plant:

Green beans
Squash of some description - Crown Prince seems to be popular up here and they are HUGE
Courgettes
Tomatoes
Broccoli
Lettuce
Purple sprouting broccoli
Spring onions
Strawberries
We already have raspberries
Blackberries
Might try my hand at a cauliflower
And I might see if I can get a couple of cordon fruit trees, but they seem ruinously expensive

We had quite a lot of success last year apart from the winter cabbages and brussels which I neglected once Ewan was born and then the snow came. Think some bunnies enjoyed them though. We also have two apple trees but they didn't fruit last year :(

This is our plan for this year:

Courgettes
Onions
Garlic
Peas
Suede
Carrots
Cauliflowers
Cabbages (we have three types)
Spuds (again three types)
Turnip
Brussels
Raspberrys
Rhubard
Blackcurrants
Strawberrys

If you want seeds for Peas, Suede, Carrots, Cabbages, Brussels, Cauliflower, leeks or Turnips just let me know and I'll send you some.

We fenced off a 4x3m bit of grass in the back yard and dh turned the soil last weekend as the frost kills of the grass (apparently). So as Im totally rubbish with plants, Im going to go to the market and buy seedlings rather than seeds, so what we grow will depend on what they have :)

Im also planning on a cheapy glass (plastic) house to grow some tomatoes etc., in - cant get a decent glass one as would be guaranteed that ds2 would whack his hurling ball in that direction and smash it :-?

We have a teeny garden and have ordered our plugs from Rocket Gardens as we found that we get more out of plugs than seeds. We will also plant tumbling tomatoes, carrots, radishes, spinach and we plant our normal tomato plants hanging upside down to save room.

I dont have a garden either, just a yard. Over the 10 years we have lived here we have a huge selection of plants (all in pots) including a 10ft bamboo :giggle: .

I will be growing:

Tomatoes
herbs
lettuce
peas
potatoes
green beans
dwarf beans runner beans
maybe carrots (never have much luck with them)
maybe more..............

I think a seed swap is a brilliant idea. I always have loads left over each year.

I only do raise beds and pots, but here's our collection this yr! Some have been started inside. Yes its alot of seeds!!!! But... its for the whole family. I start everything going.. and as soon as they are ready to pot into 9cm pots everyone comes round and collects their share :) Our early rhubard sprouted up a couple of weeks ago.. and is already beginning to leaf, thats when I tend to start everything else going
