Ok, I'm going to completely butt in here and start asking dim questions

Many of you seem to undertake regular preventative measures. I've never heard of doing that. Is that what I'm suppose to do? I just check DS1's hair when I shampoo it.

Help! Feeling somewhat inadequate.

it is easier to see in boys hair. I only do preventative measures because dd1 has such sensitive skin and scalp.

Lets put it this way - my hair is REALLY long and quite thick so the last time OH had to go through it with the nitty gritty comb it involved sitting in the bath for nearly 2 hours with conditioner all over my head
I check the boys hair, and OH checks his DD's, so regularly because I'm paranoid about getting them myself!
Even at that it's just when I wash their hair, so maybe a couple of times a week :)

They are a complete pain - especially as you've said, because other parents don't treat them properly. Bring back school nit nurses! We were plagued at the kids previous school on and off for years, despite using comb and conditioner every couple of days, with much complaining by the kids. Did try other chemical treatments in desperation that worked well, but gave up on these because it didn't seem right to use them recurrently. Now have got rid completely at the mo. For my son buying hair clippers has worked and for my daughter changing schools did the trick!!! Don't worry, not suggesting you take such drastic lengths...Nitty Gritty comb and lashings of cheap supermarket conditioner.

I nit comb my eldest daughters hair every couple of days otherwise we have really bad problems, and I am paranoid of getting them myself. I have these visions of going to the hairdressers and them saying excuse me you have nits.

Since I had quite a bit cut off though I use straighteners every couple of days so I was wondering if that would kill them anyway.

Marie, I don't really but his school is pretty good at letting us know so then I'll do preventative measures, but not all the time! Will also check if I see him itching at all!

I don't check them either, unless nursery have mentioned an outbreak.

Thanks everyone. Feeling slightly less inadequate now.

Will be clipping Elliott's hair later today and my SIL is ordering me some Neem oil so that I can use it when an outbreak occurs. Elliott's school is pretty good at letting us know about outbreaks.

Tying long hair up helps avoid them. I *think* we're nit-free atm but with 4 girls and me with long hair, and dd3 and 4 really not liking being combed, dd4's hair is really thick and tangles in minutes it's hard to keep tabs :( And seeing as we don't do school we wouldn't really need to enforce combing if we didn't have the risk of headlice.
