megansmummy wrote:Well i posted about this a few weeks ago on here becuase we didnt get a collection for 2 weeks and our council wouldnt allow us to put extra bags out for collection when they did finally make it... Our tip wont take household rubbish (they will however recyle platics, glass etc etc etc) but kitchen rubbish/general rubbish cannot be taken to the tip/recyle centre...

Now THAT is a different issue and I will happily join in slating your council for its nonsensical rules!

Were one of the areas in the news and tbh it's beyond a joke - we haven't had our refuge collected for 5weeks now - they did however come and do the recycling today for the first time  I can't understand it when the refuge is the problem, surely they should tackle that first

You do wonder what people put in their black bins.

We've got 2 kids, one in sposies and we still don't fill our black bin in a 2 week period - I compost everything I can and most plastics, paper, card and tin can go in the green bin.

It just makes you wonder what people are throwing away!

I have two kids, only one in nappies (sposie at night, cloth during the day) and we get emptied every 2 weeks and I easily fill my black bin :-? And i fill my blue bin (glass, card, tins etc) which is also emptied every 2 weeks! I dont have a compost heap...

Maybe i should make it my new years resolution to cut down on rubbish, but i dont think i throw out an excessive amount of stuff really...infact i often end up filling my bin with stuff that ought to go in the recycling bin but if thats full they wont take extra bags of recycling so i tend to have to throw it into the normal bin (which i hate doing) but otherwise i would end up with a backlog...

but it sounds like you don't have plastic recycling - which is the biggest thing for us. - and sorry - that wasn't aimed at you  just comparing to neighbours who I know have similar recycling facilities to us.

Two weeks we wouldn't fill our bin either, but 5wks we have...and I think the time of year people will have entertained more so surely they've increased waste. Were lucky as our one bin is full and last night DH had to put the first bag on top..but we won't get our refuge taken until a week Friday if they stick to the normal
schedule..

it sounds more like your problem is the size of the recycling bin.

we really struggled during the strikes in the summer - the black bin wasn't that full but the recycling bin was overflowing. I have friend who was fine, cos they have a milk man - but he's too expensive for us, so we're stuck with loads of empty plastic milk bottles.

I think a compost bin makes quite a difference - especially if you eat quite a lot of fruit and veg. We can put out a caddy a day sometimes depending on what we're eating  , and when the recycling bin is a bit full I quite often stick paper and card in there too.
