Composting ( trying not to sing the Mr bloom theme tune)

Postby scarlet » Wed Apr 27, 2011 6:32 pm

We are looking to get a composter / wormery for our garden.
Whats the difference?
What do you have and would you recommend it?
Also i have read that meat and cooked veg can't be put in a composter, are there any that can take these?
Thanks ladies.

We have bokashi bins that then get emptied into the composter. We put anything and everything in. Just putting the boys to bed, but can answer any questions soon.

Shadow iv had a little look at those they look interesting. Do you keep it in your kitchen? Do you have a compositor in your garden as well?

We keep them just outside the back door and add to it every evening. I usually end up with a bowl full of bits starting with one of the boys cereal bowls in the morning, which just gets added to. The bokashi works best if you don't open it too many times so I wouldn't add to it throughout the day iyswim. It's an anaerobic thing, whereas compost is aerobic. We then have a composter at the end of the garden, once the bokashi bin is full, you leave it for a couple of weeks and then empty it in to the composter, covering with compost from the bottom. It seems to accelerate the compost too, our composter has become much faster since using bokashi too.

LOL I love Mr Bloom, so does Rhys, and he sounds so cute when he tries to recite the whole poem, but can barely keep up with it :giggle:

We have a little counter-top container that we keep peelings etc in during the day, then once a day I transfer it all either to our composter, or if it's cooked waste it goes into the council brown bin which they take away to use as landfill topping (not great, but better than nothing).

Sounds good Shadow , I like that you can put that into the compost! Will get DP on it. We now also need a new kitchen bin as ours broke yesterday!
