Clearing plumbing blockages without using harmful chemicals?

Postby Velvetsteph » Mon Aug 04, 2008 7:01 am

Our sink and bath are horribly blocked - standing water type blocked... Soda crystals and boiling water won't work as it's standing water and DH has done his best with the plunger... :?

So short of buying some really quite evil chemicals to pour down the drain and disolve the blockage (thinking mr.muscle) does anyone know of a more environmentally friendly and natural way of resolving the issue?

We did pour some bleach down last night  which does seem to have helped a little but I'd really rather avoid pouring large quantities of bleach into the water system...

Is your plunger the standard rubber one with a wooden handle? If so you could try a blast unblocker like this one - it gives high pressure plunging so might shift it - http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav/nav.j ... earch=true

Or have you tried taking off the U bend and using rods to clear the blockage?

we have the plunger which Sadie gave the link for and can highly recommend it for both toilets and sinks - ours was even used last night!

Sounds good we'll have to look into getting one of those...

Unfortunately I think the blockage is further down than the s-bend trap :?

I think our blockages have been further down too - as sometimes we could get loads of water down, then it would stop, but that plunger really helped as you fill it up with water before you squirt it and you can do it massess of times without using up human energy or thinking you are going to get the sink off the wall and then once cleared a bag of soda crystals (yeap a whole bag to make doubly sure) has always done the trick for us.
