New or secondhand?

Postby amba » Sat Nov 22, 2014 11:40 am

I was going to use my old pushchair, it's only had Charlie in it (3 in December)
But it has developed a squeak and the brakes keep sticking! Im wondering if I should buy a secondhand one or just buy a new that will probably last a lot longer? I was thinking of doing mothercare's'baby plan'
Or whether i should look for a secondhand one and hope it lasts!
I have 7 weeks and 4 days to decide

I'd wd40 the squeaky wheels. What do you mean by breaks sticking? Sound like it might be fixable/not a massive problem. What's the mothercare plan?

The breaks keep clicking as the wheels go round, I've tied it up with string.
Mothercare baby plan - you pay a deposit on a pushchair/pram you like (anything over £250) then pay it off monthy for 12 months

Any interest to pay on the mothercare plan? I think I'd find a handy friend to look at breaks. Usually fixable in my experience!

@amba I'd check the baby plan, when we looked at it last year you didn't get delivery of the items until you had paid in full but it was indeed interest free.

If you do go down the new route you could still get your chair repaired and sell it on? At least that way you aren't paying out quite as much. We had sold our travel system by the time we had our second and even though there is only 4 years between them I couldn't quite get over the different options now available. We bought second hand the first time and found issues with the systems so this time we bought first hand, it also helped because it was pretty much the only thing we had to buy as we had everything else! Oh right I didn't realize that you had to finish paying before you could get the pushchair! I will have to ask about it

Mothercare now offer a finance option as well as the baby plan which you need to pay it all before you get it delivered.

We have had various new systems, most of which have ended up needed to have parts replaced so I would always buy a long term system new, just for the warranty. We've had issues with Mothercare's own brand pushchairs, Bugaboo and Jane. All the problems were sorted quickly thanks to the warranty.

If you do buy second hand, Google reviews, check for common faults and check the areas on the pushchairs before leaving. Also, pay by PayPal then if it is faulty, you have cover.

I bought new last time, needed a spare and so for that bought second hand. I wish I'd bought second hand first time round as I would have saved hundreds of pounds but I did go for a phil & teds which are pretty indestuctible-good advice about checking for flaws on reviews etc. Are you thinking of a larger family again? That would sway me on the choice x

No more after this baby! @dora
I don't mind buying secondhand if I'm honest, but the new ones are so pretty :giggle:
I would have asked my dad to look at the brakes, as he was a handyman at everything, but he passed away in april (before we knew baby was to arrive) I would ask hubby to look but he sometimes makes things worse, he does try tho
