overlocker... any tips?

Postby bubbaloo » Mon Jan 18, 2010 8:38 am

Hi
I am thinking of buying an overlocker
I have no experience and want something simple cheap and easy to use

Anyone recommend a very cheap starter?
Are they difficult to use?
I can use main stitches on sowing machine but thats it so far

It depends really what you want it for.

The newer, cheaper overlockers aren't all that great in my experience. They wont be able to slice through many/thick layers of fabric and have a tendancy to have very loose stitches on them.

Do you have a sewing machine shop locally? Go there and tell them what you want the machine for and they should be able to advice you as to which one would suit you best.

As with all machines, we've found time and time again the older ones are the better ones. They're more sturdy, simpler, less prone to breakdowns and easier to fix if they ever do.

At the moment we've got an industrial overlocker, a Babylock and a Janome. All of which are a lot older than me but very reliable and hardworking! They're not much to look at but do as they're told lol!

There is quite a bit of talk about overlockers in the DIY section

OOO!! Are you in Swansea?! :wine:

The only place in Swansea is Cliffords in Sandfields.....sadly though their work hasn't been all that great recently. There is also a mobile repair guy who's in the Gorseinon area, I can get his number for you if you want?

ETA: I'm such a dumbass! I've just realised who you are!

 Rita lol!
