How cool!

I borrowed a book that showed teaching kids and she used huge needles. Apparently much easier for them to handle and see their stitches with the bonus of things knitting up quickly for them.

Sounds good. How old are they likely to be etc?
The ideas so far sound good about casting on and perhaps knit 1 /2 rows for them first. You can get those kiddy needles that are different colours so that you can say orange needle into stitch on red needle ...
I wonder whether showing them a video of the knit stitch would be good sometimes it's easier for a group that size the see it on a video first then you show them in real life? Finger knitting is always a good one start with too, but they may want to get started with the needles.
Good luck, let us know how you get on!

Very exciting! Are you going to teach them the knitting rhyme from Knitting Help? (It's how I leant to knit. As an adult. Yes, I know it's aimed at children. )

In through the front door
Around the back
Peek through the window
Off jumps Jack!

Thanks ladies for all your suggestions, the age group will be 8-13yr olds, mainly girls i expect but boys more than welcome
I think i will aim to get 4.5 or 5mm short needles and aran weight yarn to start with, not going to get acrylic wool,i think something with a wool or cotton content will be nicer to start with, i dont want to put them off straight away.
I am planning to start them off by casting on and knitting the first couple of rows and see how they all get on, hopefully some of them wont be complete beginners or i will be rather busy.
Planning to start the group after the Easter holidays on a Tuesday , just waiting for my CRB clearance (i have been good, honest :giggle: )and find out what the materials budget is too.
DS1  when i told him but he's cool with it now, mummy teaching at the school :loopy:
will try the rhymes to see if it helps and also strictly no scarf knitting either, too long and boring to finish.
I have never bought pink or girly yarn before so off to have a browse :giggle:

Little update :D
Took my first class yesterday, it went well, i knew the girls, 2 are in DS2's class, it was only a small class of 3 which i was glad about because i was on my own and two of the girls had never knitted before.
I took all of my girly wool in and let them choose, mainly Rowan cottons and a few handdyed remnants, of course there was a bun fight for the full skein of Pixie Knits Rustic :giggle:
So i-pod and i-pad covers were cast on and started for them and taken home, lets see what they bring back next week
All in all a bit of fun and hopefully enough to spark interest to keep on :knit: .
