Is lanolising once enough for a new wool cover?

Postby Juli » Thu May 10, 2012 1:32 pm

Hi everyone,

Baby is due in 4 weeks and (after being convinced to give wool a try on this forum) I bought a new Baby Beehinds wool cover. I've washed it once with wool wash powder (German brand "Perwoll" - my grandmother sent it to me from Germany) and am lanolising it at the moment using Woolishous solid lanolin. I've used half a teaspoon of lanolin and a tiny tiny bit of the wool wash powder (just enough to disperse the lanolin in the water) in a bowl of warm water just enough to cover the wrap (so maybe 2l of water). Does that sound like enough lanolin to you? Will I have to repeat this process a few times before I use it for the first time, or is once enough?

Thanks :)

I think it is recommended that you lanolise about 3 times with a new cover, but I have to admit I just did them once with the news ones I have had, but just put extra lanolin in and it has always been ok. If you have the time though it would be worth doing it a couple more times. If I remember rightly you dont even have to dry them afterwards you can just empty the water then re fill with more lanolin added

It's usually said that lanolising 3 times will get it up to full waterproof-ness.
But it will be ok to use after just one lanolising - which is how most of the WAHM send out their woollies.
Tbh, I found it was worthwhile using the nappy cover before lanolising again, as it gives the lanolin time to be worked in/absorbed by the wool. If you lanolise 3 times in a row without wearing inbetween (as I tried once :giggle: ) you run the risk of the cover being really quite sticky and tricky to get on an off baba :-?

I think for a newborn you might have to do it a couple more times as they tend to pee a lot.
They way you did it is just fine :D

I only ever donut once and I just change more often which to be fair you do with a newborn anyway. I usually keep the new ones for day until they have been washed and lanolised a few times.

So I did it just once yesterday and it's drying at the moment, but it seems quite sticky to the touch, so I think I might just leave it at once, and if I find that it leaks I'll know I have to do it a few more times.
