With SSK, you slip 2 stitches from the left needle to the right, then slip the left needle through the front of the 2 stitches and knit them together.

Have a look at this video, it explains quite well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElpMIbuF ... re=related

One is a left leaning decrease and one is a right leaning decrease. So if you are knitting in the round eg a pair of longies and you don't really mind which way the decrease leans then they are interchangeable and you can do whichever you prefer. Personally I prefer ssk because I knit a bit tightly

I don't knit in round. I knew ssk was interchangable with something, but it's the same as casting off a stitch rather than knit2tog.

All depends how you cast off - with ssk you still 'knit' the two together whereas a traditional bind off you pass a stitch over........ssk is the same as stretchy bind off tho.

I meant in terms of the direction of slant, I've always done knit 2 tog and then purl 2 tog on the next row, to get the slants in the right direction, but I wanted to find a different way...

Ssk doesn't look the same as cast off stitch hun, it should look the same as your k2tog just in the opposit direction ;)
