Far Away so Close (FACS) shawl - help and KAL!

Postby clothmama » Sat Feb 09, 2013 10:42 am

Edit: for those that want to join in please do :) no worries if you haven't got wool ect I'm a hugely slow knitter with little time so I'm sure I'll be last finished  . So who's in?

I think I may have bitten of more than I can chew :panic: I had managed to get the initial stitches on and did the 'next row' bit and even started the first pattern of the shawl. At that point I realised that I had somehow missed 2 holes (YO formed I think  ) and decided to rip it all back and start again. Problem is I now can't work out how on earth I did the 7th row
rotate work 90 degrees clockwise and pick up and knit 3 stitches along the selvedge edge

How did I manage to do it before and now can't :x , I can't even work out what needle I used and actually have a sneaking suspicion I may have kind of crocheted it and not used 2 needles at all :lookround: :giggle: is that allowed!!

Help me please! I knit continental style and I'm right handed if that makes a difference!

Does anyone want to do a KAL with me??? I'm a newbie knitter, have only done a few things and would love some support!

This is supposed to be something I can do to relax and wind down in front of the the TV in the evening and I have ended up almost stabbing DH with my metal needles  :x :hohoho: :hohoho:

I have one in the needles somewhere I need to pick up again. As for the picking up on the selvedge edge 1) don't do it when you are tired 2) don't do it when anyone is likely to interrupt you and 3) everytime I knit a FASC I have to cast on a few times before it looks right. I use a crochet hook to help pick up the stitches onto the left needle before knitting them I to the right

OK so I need to get the 3 selvage stitches on the left then just knit them on? Does it work that way continental? Sorry I'm such a newb!

Thank goodness it isn't just me! I must be up to about 10 times I've done the first stupid 6 rows!

The irony is that I did it when I got it to work at about 4am on nightshift :hohoho:

I'm so gutted now that I somehow stuffed up the YO holes on one side!

It doesn't look right, I'm on my phone so it is small.

Try casting on quite loosely so you can see the spaces between the stitches

No idea about continental , sorry!

perhaps @northernruth can explain better but you need to pick up and knit each stitch one at a time

The way i do it is to knit the stitches on the needle.

Then with the left hand needle, put the tip under the first of the edge stitches going down the left hand side of the knitting (so it's like any other stitch on the needle) and just knit it, then do that twice more.

Do the same sort of thing with the stitches along the cast on edge.

A KAL sounds like a great idea  give me a few weeks to make a yarn decision

Yes, just pick up and knit the next 3 stitches down the left hand side between the tip of your needle and the yarn tail at your cast on edge. It will be fine :)

Yes just pick up a loop and knit into it. The trick is not to turn your work at the end of the 6th row. Keep I facing you and rotate 90 degrees

I'm up for a KAL just need to decide what yarn to use. Altho I have 3 things on the go at the moment......

I'm tempted but I'm not really a shawl-wearer...how much yarn does a medium one take?
