Learn to knit longies -- Important Update (06/08/10)!

Joeli, I am on the short rows...amm i putting them in the right place? they are the 44st's right after the marker...

I knitted 44, turned, YO, purled 44, turned, YO when i got to the first hole i k2tog and then when i got right the way back round again i SSK the second hole...the only thing i was worried about was the the second hole had the st marker in the middle (becuase the YO was right at the other side of the marker... so i removed the st marker SSK'd the st and the YO and then put the marker back on and carried onto the next round? does that all sound right

Yup, that's what I would have done. But to be honest, even if it was wrong, you would have only moved the marker one stitch and it wouldn't even be noticable.

I'm thinking about giving this a go but I've never even managed to cast on properly before.

me too! Went to a wool shop over the weekend and bought some needles and yarn and am now practising a lot of the basics by making DH a scarf. Will move onto something else as well before its finished but its been a good way for me to get started.

Lots of people have gone straight onto knitting the longies/shorties tho and had lots of success. to knitting and ANOTHER addiction (which one you an also buy in grams )

Absolutly, gove it ago...watch on you tube and practice and you will get it right!

Another daft question from me...when it says measure the work...where should i be meauring once the short rows are in? the shorter bit or the longer bit??

Pretty sure it is the shorter bit, ie the front. That's where I always measure.

Joeil, did I see that you are working on some improvements in the pattern? All the ones I have knitted seem to have a bit of a 'dangly' crotch would I be better off doing less increases for the gusset to keep it narrower maybe? And if so how would I go about doing that?

I've just started another pair, will I be ok to knit up to as far as the increases for the gusset before anything changes as I have itchy fingers now!

I was just going to ask the same thing...im still working through the rise at the moment and havnt got to the increases...

I'm not sure how well the new way is going to work. I mean it looks okay and it gets rid of the need to graft and pick up stitches but it might not give enough flexibility. But if you both want to be testers for it, you can knit until the rise is 1" less then you want (as measured down the front Tory )
