I have just done the gusset increase and put the stitches between makers D & A on a piece of yarn. I am confused what I have to do next  do I need a sewing needle?

Yes, you need a sewing needle with an eye hole big enough for the yarn (called a tapestry needle). Then you graft the next 8 pairs of sts together (google Kitchener stitch). If you don't have a tapestry needle and you are anxious to get on, you can do a 3 needle bind off (again, google it) and that will work too.

Did you use the "wrap and turn" method for the short rows? If so you pick up the first wrap with your needle and knit it together with the next stitch, the second wrap you come to you want to slip the stitch before the wrap, pick up the wrap with your needle, then slip back that first stitch and then knit them together.
