Should I lanolise my sheepskin rugs?

Postby Mareth » Tue Jul 15, 2008 3:18 pm

I'm just about to wash my sheepskin rugs, should I lanolise them once I'm done, or will they be fine?

Thanks

I don't know - guessing they don't need lanolising, but then who knows

I tried to google 'how to lanolise a sheepskin rug' and amazingly came up with absolutely no results.

I did find one site that said occasional lanolising can help, but don't know whether it's actually needed. They weigh an absolute tonne, so if I can get away with not wetting them again then I will

I would have thought not, wouldn't more dirt and bits stick to it if it had been lanolised? Actually if it was common to lanolise them, then lanolin would be more readily available.

Really I have no idea though.

We have 2, the first one I did came from TK Maxx and was quite higly processed and when I washed it it held A LOT of water and weighed a tonne. I just washed the second one, which we got from a farmer local to MIL's house and has only been very lightly tanned. That one, as soon as I put it in the bath it stank of lanolin (obviously directly from the sheep) and didn't hold nearly as much water.

I'm thinking that since the shop bought one obviously wasn't lanolised I won't bother. The farm one still seems to have a lot left it in even after washing.

Interesting question - depends what colour they are I guess - lanolising might make them a bit more dirt resistant...

My grandmother had one in her house for over 15 years, and I don't recall it ever being more than spot cleaned, and it was definately never lanolinised. And she ironed her bed sheets and underwear - so it wasn't because she didn't have the time for it.

Sorry to bring up such an old post but I'm wondering about washing my sheepskin rug...
Do you think it would be okay in the washing machine on the wool wash (or even the hand-wash) cycle?
