Just something simple, I did think about one of the rainbow cakes that are in ATM with a simple flower and butterfly on the outside but the E numbers make me cringe!

The amount used in cakes is so tiny though. Just a teeny amount on the end of a cocktail stick for one cake.

You can evenbuy ready rolled icing, I got some on offer a while back, was cheaper than rolling it myself! :D This is the cake I made for Esme's first birthday, very simple, but did the job!

Louise if I did a rainbow cake with a plain outside what would you recommend for holding it all together and what sort of icing would you use on the outside? Oh and best food colouring? (Sorry to bombard you  )

I can ice but I don't really have the time. For Martha's birthday last year I bought a Tangled cake topper from ebay, it had a picture from the movie and you can get them personalised, I think it said Happy Birthday Martha.

@Rox is a demon decorater too, she might have some ideas

Buttercream for the inside and then whatever you want on the outside. The colouring I perfer is sugarflair, you can buy a rainbow pack from ebay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sugarflair-Ge ... 3f0a7ae840

(That's what I used for M's 1st birthday cake)

For the outside you can either do buttercream with sugarpaste over the top, just buttercream or just royal icing. (egg white -or egg white powder if you're worried about using raw egg - and icing sugar whisked together). I'd go for either the first option or the royal icing as I think white might be a nice contrast against all that colour.

Ok, what's the difference between Royal icing and sugar paste? Is one easier than the other? I think I will do rainbow inside with white over the top and multicoloured butterflies on the outside cross your fingers I can pull it off! I will probably be back with more questions before the big bake
