Shaped cakes-aahh!

Postby ponygirl » Wed Jun 13, 2012 5:46 pm

We have decided to make a pony shaped cake for lo's birthday in 2 weeks time. Now doing test runs! Have bought a pony cake mould but the cake got stuck on its way out!! Came out in pieces :( And I have no idea how to ice the thing!

Any ideas?

I use grease proof paper, although have not ventured beyond squares and circles so don't know how it'll work with a pony, the paper might crease too much, either that or loads of butter to line it.

I would be tempted to pipe it in buttercream to give the effect of fur.

Good luck x

Cake release spray/gel stuff. Couldn't live without it in this house. Lakeland stocks a good one.

Yes either cake release spray or oil and flour does pretty much the same thing. Brush the oil on with a pastry brush, then add a little flour and shake the pan around to distribute the flour evenly. I have a few shaped tins but prefer to bake rectangles/round/square cakes then carve the cake into the shape I want myself. Much easier really!

I did butter and flour the tin but still got stuck! I'm not artistic enough to carve a pony! Hopefully as long as can get most of it out can cover any inperfections with icing

Good luck with your cake, hopefully the cake release spray does the trick!

Cake release spray! I only discovered this lately but it's brilliant! I just use Dr Oetkers from the supermarket.
