Is it false economy to buy dried beans/chickpeas, etc?

Postby Iverson » Sun Aug 26, 2012 7:39 pm

I always buy dried instead of cans because it's cheaper. But as I have some chickpeas boiling in the kitchen for 1.5 to 2 hours right now, I'm thinking of how much gas is being used to cook these things! I wonder if I should just buy it in a can and not use all that gas!! Anyone know real numbers or info about this? Like, how much does it cost to boil chickpeas for 2 hours on a gas hob?

I always buy tinned because I'm lazy

I guess getting a reasonable cost for how long it takes to boil something on a gas hob will have too many variable factors such as how big the pan is, how big the gas ring is, how much water is in the pan, What the quality of the pan is like, what gas tariff you are on, did you boil the kettle for the cooking water first???

Oops no, I never remember to boil the kettle first! It has scaly stuff and junk in it so I never use it!

I always boil my beans in large batches then freeze so they're ready to use when needed. I soak them for 24 hours and change the water twice. The thing that puts me off tins are the chemicals in the plastic lining, so I try to avoid them as much as possible. x

I buy both!

The dried ones go in the slow cooker - they dont totally disintegrate that way!

The tinned ones are used when Im cooking something quickly on the top of the hob - saves all the time soaking/boiling them!

Do you still soak and boil them prior to going in the slow cooker?

I prefer dried, they taste better imo. But I do still use tinned sometimes as they are more convenient. I plan better with dried and our le creuset means they cook well too :)
