Talk to me about cake decorating

Postby 0_Lisa_0 » Sun Jan 13, 2013 3:40 pm

I can bake and I enjoy it, but I can't decorate a cake to save my life :( with Holly's first birthday coming up I really want to make something nice, Austin's was awful! I would like your top tips please, easiest most effective look, am I better going for cupcakes than a big cake? Are there easy ways to do a big cake and make it look pretty for someone who barely has an artistic bone in their body?
Thanks.

Sugarpaste is fairly easy to work with. Cover the cake in buttercream, roll out the sugarpaste, roll it around the rolling pin then over the cake. Plenty of shops sell ready made sugarcraft decorations and there are some ebay sellers who make them to order if you don't fancy making them yourself. Have you any theme in mind?

I have done a cow a bit like this

But I just used one round cake and made the face with the rest cut out of icing and used fondant/sugar paste rather than buttercream
I like this too

I think a big cake is easier but Lou may disagree

Wow! I love that skittles cake-taste the rainbow and all that! I want to try my hand at proper decorating this year.
First have to find a tasty gluten free and vegan cake for Evie :?
