Another one with nursery problems!maybe tmi-poo

Postby lazylexis » Thu Sep 27, 2012 6:38 pm

As u probably know Nathan has constipation problems. He holds on when he needs a poo and won't go. If we can get him to sit on the potty he will do anything from a tiny bit to a normal sized poo. He'll sit on it maybe once every 1-2 days. In between he is holding on every 10-20 mins and probably once every 1- 1 1/2 hours if out or distracted. When holding on some leaks out as he is on movicol so everything stays soft. At home we change him at least twice every 1- 1 1/2 hrs if not more on a bad day. He is nowhere near potty trained.Nursery are aware of all this and said they could change hourly if necessary. He is there 9-3 tues and 9-1 wed and thurs. This week was the first time he stayed til 3. if u ask him if he needs a nappy he will always say no. Every day so far on collecting him he has been dirty.Difficult to say how long for tho as they have lunch at 12.30.They haven't changed him more than once a day.On Tues at 9 I even said he was likely to need changing more often as we had increased his movicol but he still only got done once between 9 &3. I count his nappies every day and we are using disposables (:-( due to his problems and he has outgrown everything we have) so I am presuming they are just using ours. Am I unrealistic to expect him to be changed more often?

No, it is not unreasonable to expect them to change a dirty nappy! I would expect them to change a dirty nappy as soon as possible - it's part of the absolutely basic care for a child IMO. Would they leave a small baby in a soiled nappy? I doubt it. So the same should apply to N. They are clearly aware that he has issues with poo so are neglecting his needs by not changing him regularly. I would see the nursery manager and insist that they check hourly for poo instead of asking him as that clearly isn't working.

I agree with Claire that it's a basic need that needs to be met.

At M's nursery, they change nappies at certain times of the day. For example all the kids get changed at 10am, after lunch and then 2.30 - 3pm and then if they are soiled outside of those times. Do they not run a similar system?

I'd be speaking to the manager about the situation and see what they say. I think his age is irrelevant.

I think only changing once (if thats the case) within that time frame is bordering on negligence. Definitely say something-you are paying for a service x

It's difficult to know how long he has been dirty for- we were out for 3 hrs last week and he was ok but that's unusual.I shall mention it next week. He's not been sore yet so it's possible he's not soiling as much. Since he is 3 he's getting his funded hours.

I would suggest speaking the manager and saying something along the lines of that because of his problem you need to be more aware of when he is changed and the content, so could they please write it down (maybe provide a small book) time/wet/soiled/when checked!

Tbh it annoys me no end that nurseries dont do this anyway, I think this info is vital in spotting problems in a child, especially those who attend for whole days!

I would say something. The boys go to nursery from 12 to 5pm. Asher is changed after lunch and again at around 3. I send him in with two nappies in his bag but sometimes he will come home in a sposie as they've got through all his nappies in that afternoon. As he is under two all his changes are documented in his home book, but after two all the nappy changes and toilet trips are documented on the toilet door.

I would ask for a written record of changes, it won't be difficult for them, and certainly given the situation, they should be more than willing to work with parents to ensure needs are met. there should be no reason for a child to be left in a soiled nappy at ANY age.
