How to keep kids out of the midday sun?

Okay so not the whole four hours but I feel so cruel keeping Isabelle indoors during the hottest part of the day and we have the doors and windows open, she doesn't understand why she can't go outside and doesn't want to play indoors!
She's got a sunhat and sunscreen on but is currently refusing water (off to buy some squash/juice shortly) but it's still blinking hot in the sun and 20 degrees in the shade and it's only just past noon...

I normally just make them stay inside, but then we don't have any back doors here. How about getting a parasol or canopy of some sort which she can play under?

It's cloudy and rainy here today and not particularly sunny I'll probably be facing this problem too though when it gets hotter. Parasol / canopy sounds like a good idea. We had a little sunshade tent we used when Matthew was little but there's no way he'd stay in it now!

Can't think of any advice, our kids have always played outside with sun cream etc on, they do tend to come in when they get too hot. When we are away in the "proper" sun we either go out to a shopping mall for lunch and a wander or have a long lunch inside, the place we go to have a lovely big terrace. The kids spend a lot of time under "the arches" as they call it, it's a covered area on ground level, they plug in the ds's or play with balls etc with the other kids. x

We tend to be indoors having lunch or whatever at the peak of the day but I will just make sure they are in hats and suncream and let them play out - stick to the "slip slap slop" philosophy. Charlotte has never really had any sort of tan even when we went for a week to Greece, I am very careful not to expose them to the sun

Our trick to keep the kids in is a portable stairgate that we put across the conservatory door - enables us to have the door open when it is hot but doesn't let the kids (well Ben mostly) escape

We simply just dont go out in the middle of the day. Its a rule that the girls know. Around that time of the day is when I set up activities for them instead so they aren't even interested in going out.
