Nursey - Update and Question too.

Postby jules070603 » Sat Jul 18, 2009 10:46 am

On Wednesday we had Zachs open day at nursery. He starts on the 15th September and got afternoons.

The nursery is fantastic, I am so glad we picked that one and I hope he gets in at the school. The nursery itself is fantastic (the school has recently been rebuilt and the nursery was a new addition last year). It has an amazing outdoor area as well as brilliant play areas inside. Zach happily ran off to play while we went to the hall for the induction talk. The teachers and other staff all seem lovely and the school moto is 'always be your best', they believe in being child focussed and celebrating all childrens achievements. The acting headteacher has been there for 27 years and was there when I was, she taught my brother actually and was his favourite teacher :D

They have an open snack table with endless fruit and breadsticks etc and water (which is where Zach will spend a lot of time I reckon :hohoho: ) and when I went to pick him up he was playing trains (how could I think he'd be anywhere else :giggle: ) The school meals are very good, lots of homecooked and only chips once a week (Zach won't have this until he starts reception obviously), we got to sample some of it - Anyone remember cheese whirls :D

My only problem is that we got afternoons, no chance to change I don't reckon. Out of 39 nursery places 32 requested mornings  Zach will find this quite difficult I think, he still naps occasionally now and if he has a busy afternoon we really notice in his behaviour. Has anyone else had to deal with this? Any tips on getting through the afternoon and evening? I think we will have awful bedtimes when he starts

All in all I am really happy and Zach hasn't stopped talking about it since we went on Wednesday. My main aim will be to get Immy to sleep in the afternoon :giggle: Just need to buy a couple of jumpers from the right place and get the other basics from elsewhere for his uniform.

awww it sounds lovely and very similar to the nursery at our school that Katie has been at.

re the afternoons, I think you'll just have to see how he goes and try not to worry too much until you see what actually happens. Katie did afternoons but then she didn't nap after she was about 18 months so that wasn't an issue, but I did find that even if she was tired and whingey all morning with me she was absolutely fine at nursery and then aftrewards when we got home - I actually preferred the afternoon session as it meant we could still do all our other activities in the morning ;)

Sounds like a fab nursery :wine: As ofr afternoons I think he will probably just adjust. He will be tired after but perhaps could nap on teh way home? Jack (nearly 10 now) used to often fall asleep when he was in reception and I would have to go into the classroom and pick up my sleeping child :giggle:

We had the same thing when Ethan started nursery, wanted mornings & got afternoons, I found it o.k after all as it gets you in practice for getting them to school but it isn't 1st thing in the morning when you have everything else to do as well.

i'm glad you both liked the nursery it makes you feel so much happier about the lo's going

Hi Sarah,

Its going really well and TBH afternoons is really suiting us and I'm glad we got that session now.

Zach has coped fine, we aren't really doing much in the mornings for now, Imogen has her only decent nap then anyway so its fine for us to stay in the house mostly. He is shattered for bedtime which can only be a good thing

The day seems to fly by as morning are spent getting things sorted in the house then its nursery drop off, then pick up a couple of hours later and then its time to be getting tea ready and DH is home a couple of hours later.

We did have to get in for the morning session once for a puppet show and thats when I realised I preferred afternoons. It was a rush and I didn't feel liek Zach ate enough before we went and the day seemed to last forever :giggle:

Another benefit is that the morning nursery session is full with 24 children while in Zachs session there are only about 15 children, maybe less actually, so I think Zach must benefit from that :wine:

In the New Year, we may start going to the mums and tots group again in the mornings and see how Zach gets on as I think Imogen will start to get something out of the group by then too.

It would be hard to fit a nap in though so I'm glad that we cut Zachs nap before we started. We have to have lunch by 11.45 to give him chance to eat it before setting off for nursery at 12.25 and I imagine a nap after nursery would cause problems with bedtimes but then it depends on the child really.

Good Luck, Zach absolutely loves nursery now (we had 2 days of tears at drop off and then he was fine)
