Preschool jabs

Postby jules070603 » Wed Jul 29, 2009 9:23 am

When I took Immy for her jabs yesterday I asked the nurse about the preschool jabs and Zach will the right age for his when Immy goes for her next ones in 4 weeks. As this is 2 weeks before he starts nursery we have decided to get them done then (3 years 4 months).

Just wondered how peoples children reacted to having injections at this age. Obviously Zach is going to be aware of whats happening more than he ever was before.

Think we'll ask nurse to do his before Immys sohe isn't scared by it beforehand.

Charlotte hasn't had hers, but I have taken her the last couple of times with Ben for his so she knows what goes on. I think that at this age because they are more aware, it is easier to passify them with the promise of a treat after

George had hers last week, one in each arm :( pre-school booster and mmr booster :(

She was absolutely fine getting it done, we had talked about it lots, I told her what she would have and why she was getting them. I was so proud of how brave she was :D

We got all the way back to the car afterwards and as I was strapping her in her seat she started to cry when I asked her what was wrong she said she "didn't want the nurse to do that" :giggle: :giggle:

She had no after effects other than the lump on her arm.

Hope Zach is ok with his

Last time I was at the drs with Grace there was a kid getting some jabs and her mum was seriously fussing over her explaining over and again about the sweeties... Child didn't seem that interested...
Poor kid WAILED and HOWLED and as they came out the mum wasn't exactly trying to comfort the kid (if it was me as her mum I'd have been cuddling her at the very least!) and just fussing again - telling her about the sweeties which the kid still didnt' seem bothered about or interested in and she also didn't seem to want to speak to or even know the mum!! Weird...

I've not thought about Isabelle's yet - I think I want to take her on her own tho' so I can give her a big cuddle and make a fuss of her afterwards... But perhaps she won't be that bothered once I've explained about them to her...

She won't be at school until 2010 tho' so I'm not in any hurry to get that done and she's in the pre-school room at nursery now anyway...

Hi, Scott had his done a few months back. We also talked it through lots and used his doctor's kit to role play it. We told him it was putting special medicine-soldiers in his arm to fight bad germs so he wouldn't get poorly with them. It all paid off, he didn't even whimper and incredibly, said "Thank you" to the nurse! On his way out the room he misjudged the door, wacked his head and screamed the place down. Best laid plans and all that.

He did react. One of his arms swelled up, went very hot and red. It was uncomfy for him at night but it went down in a few days and he didn't get ill as such. He continued to go to nursery as usual and was happy in the days and it looked a lot worse than it was IYKWIM. We followed the doctor's advice and put cold compresses on it occaisionally for relief and explained to him that it meant the jab was working. Out of Scott's close 8 friends, 3 had this minor reaction and all were fine.

HTH x x

Yes I think taking them on their own is a good idea so you can give them a fuss.

Hope Zach is Ok with them

I hadn't actually thought about it, kind of got past the baby jabs and forgot there was anything else  . Connor will be an absolute nightmare, he's a total drama umm king? He's been to the doc's twice in the last couple of weeks because of his cough and has for some reason decided he won't lift his top to have his chest listened too. The first time he just screamed the place down and in the end the doc just forced his t-shirt up, so don't think he could've heard anything anyway and told us his chest was clear. Went back a couple of days ago to a different doc with a much better idea of how to deal with young children, and although he happily let her listen through his t-shirt (whilst discussing smarties - my bribe), he still wouldn't lift it. Finn's due a couple of jabs so will get them booked once he shifts his cough/cold  and use them as a way to start chatting about it with Connor. Oh dear, not looking forward to it :(
