I didn't go to school on my own until I started senior school age 11! And even then it was on a school bus. The kids are too young tobe able to stop someone from snatching them, or getting hit by a car, etc. I won't let mine until senior school. I won't even let them play on their bikes out the front of our house without me watching.

A mile isn't far and I agree with giving kids responsibility but I wouldn't be comfortable with a 5 year old cycling without adult supervision - that isn't much older than Charlotte and there is no way she is cycling on her own - do they cycle on the road? That would really worry me. I think an 8 year old is fine cycling a mile to school on their own but not while caring for a 5 year old.

I would leave it a couple of years personally but it is up to the parents really. Thankfully we only live a few metres from Charlotte's school and I will be walking her there until she is a bit older.
