Have a read here: http://giftedkids.about.com/od/gifted10 ... entify.htm it also explains some of the 'difficulties' with gifted children including sensitivities etc...

Hope that helps give you some ideas for what to do with him :)

WSS , My 6 year old can at times be very challenging and a complete handful but speaking to his teacher extensively and monitoring his behaviour, we have come to realise that he he is extremely bright and is far ahead of his class peers . I have previously looked at the site that Steph posted and it goes along way to explain his behaviour, especially his emotional hypersensitivity which normally manifests itself as rages/tantrums.

There is a lot of cross over between gifted, ASD and ADD and they are often misdiagnosed but equally it is possibly to have a combination or all of them. My school age kids have all been assessed as gifted (in the top 0.5%) but some of them also have AS and/or ADD as well.

Boredom often makes gifted kids act up in class and they can sometimes be argumentative or manipulative. Chattering incessantly, whistling, singing, humming and controlling behaviour are more likely to be AS/ADD traits.

The advantage of a referral is that strengths and weaknesses can be identified through specialist tests and support can be put in place for the child in a school or home environment.

Generally, a gifted child will be viewed as being arrogant, obnoxious or disruptive simply because they have the intelligence to question what they are being told. A lot of teachers won't have this intelligence and so they simply won't even understand the concepts that the child is able to comprehend.

This can also be said about people on forums, where arguments occur when one person of lower intelligence cannot comprehend the concept that someone of higher intelligence is trying to discuss.

I have four kids with ASD, also gifted, and agree with everything nappynutter said.

Do you know what testing have the school done? Is he on the G&T register? Does he have an IEP? What support strategies do they have in place? Lots of schools are lost when it comes to supporting gifted and talented children but they have special needs too.

This doesnt sound like my DS at all
H e goes to a private school with a class size of 12, which means he is given more time and attention plus the chance to extend himself.
There is no compulsion for a private school to have a G@T register , they do have a list for the older children though, but not his age( his teacher did say he would be on in if they had one)
I think this coming school year will be crucial for deciding future support/testing.

I would keep an eye on things very carefully. Gifted kids have special needs too and they are often overlooked. From experience, private schools are often even worse at recognising those needs or having effective strategies in place. The last thing you want is a bored gifted child.

wow, thanks for that, just had a quick read through & it certainly seems more likely, will have a proper read through when i havnt got the pair of them waffling away.
he does constantly question everything & need to know why things do what they do & how, and has a very vivid imagination, also askes questions that i know his peers wouldnt even think to ask, my friends can quite often be stumped by him & have to think very quickly how to answer him.
the milestones part of that site was also interesting, emilie seems like she may head the same way......
