Banishing the dummy

Postby JenKyleKaitlinRoo » Wed Nov 10, 2010 9:21 pm

My wee Kaitlin was 4 in September and I decided tonight to banish the bedtime dummy. Part of me feels she is way to old to have it and the other part thinks its just a comfort item. Her teeth are sadly affected by it as she has a space when she puts her upper and lower teeth together and I want to give them a chance to move down into their correct place. She is obviously upset and I do think I have decided to do it at a really stupid time but mentally for me I am in the right frame of mind to be patient and caring with her and explaining why she cant have it.

Do you think I've did a stupid thing? Anyone else had to remove a dummy at this late stage? DS1 was 3 when we gave his to santa but the thought of xmas eve with an upset child and presents to wrap fills me with horror. DS1 asked for it twice and never again after that but dd will often if she finds one of Roo's during the day will put it in and suck on it.

We took Gracies off her a few months ago and she was fine, she didn't ask for it at all, perhaps that was because she was younger, not sure?
Our neighbours DD still had hers at 4 and gave it up no bother, it is one of those things you just have to go for I think.
Fc for you it goes ok, some one will be able to offer you more advise I am sure xx

Harmony and Noah had a dummy but gave it up a lot younger than Kaitlin. Noah because someone (Dan) bit holes in the only ones we could find and it was sunday night.. Harmony threw hers away herself. Both were a bit unsettled the day after when they realised they wouldn't be getting it back but we're then fine by the third day.

I would say that its the perfect excuse to shower your little girls with lots and lots of reassuring cuddles which is probably what she needs more than a dummy.

I hope it goes well and give your little girl a cuddle from me too. :)

No experience as such as Jack didn't have a Dummy...

Rufus does but from 5 months we limited it to bedtime/naptime only and I want to do away with that at somepoint but will wait til he's a bit older as it really helps him settle himself back to sleep if he wakes.

Anyway ... could you do the Dummy Fairy thing with her? I've seen quite a few SuperNanny episodes where this seems to have worked well with older children .... get her to put them all in a little bag and leave for the Dummy Fairies who come at night to take them away for new little babies that need them and leave behind a present for the Big Boy or Girl who gave them away. Hopefully she is old enough to understand that and will like being a 'Big Girl' rather than a baby ... the present could perhaps be something she can take to bed as a comforter, like maybe a GlowWorm or similar?

Re her picking up Roo's Dummies, does Roo have Dummies during the day or just at nap times? I have to keep Rufus' well out of sight as if he sees one he wants it and will cry and if I leave them within reach he'll get it & put it in his mouth & cry if it's taken away ... but when they are out of sight he is perfectly fine without. If Roo has them in the day maybe you'll need to start to cut down when he has them too in order to help Kaitlin (as well as making your life easier later on with Roo) ... if she does get one maybe say ... 'Ooo Kaitlin give that back to Roo or the Dummy Fairies might think it's yours and take it away for the new Babies' or just gently remind her she's a big girl.

That's all the ideas I have, let me know how it goes, will be watching this thread with interest as will need tips myself at some point for getting Rufus to sleep Dummyless!

Good Luck!

WSS.

I am yet to take Nathan's away (he only has it at bedtime). Was thinking of doing it at xmas but know I would feel awful if he were so upset on xmas and his birthday. No sure when to do it really :-?

Hope it goes well

Bella has one for nights only and I'm not brave enough to remove take it off her yet. DH and I also cannot agree when she should give it up. He's all for letting her give it ip herself (and uses her recent pt'ing as an example of how well that works) but I'm not so sure she will actually give them up. Luckily she has no problems with her teeth so far.
