School attendance - How many days off is counted as alot?

Postby RUBY_1985 » Wed Feb 02, 2011 2:16 pm

Hi

I know similar questions have been asked about this but im worried about DD school attendance. She is only 4 so I know she isnt legally required to be in school until 5.

The thing im worried about is she seems to have had alot of days off sick and is currently off school ill again. She isnt well enough to go back to school this week as she isnt eating and has a high temperature etc. Im just worried as after this week she will have had 10 days off school all due to illness.

Does anyone know how many days you can have off school before the school classes their attendance as poor? I dont know if 10 days is a lot or not....not that it can be helped, but im still getting worried about it as I dont want school thinking I just keep her at home for the sake of it.

Does anyone know how schools work out their attendance %?

Im dreading ringing school again tomorrow to say DD will still be off.

last year my Ds1 had 19 absences which is 9.5 days. His attendance was still marked as excellent. The half day was for an opthamology app. He seemed to catch everything going last year and it didn't help they make them have 2 days from when they were last vomitting etc. Once we got to march he wasn't off at all until the end of term. This year he's been off 1.5 days.

Thats reassuring that he still has excellent attendance as he had a similar amount of time to what DD has had. It definatley doesn't help with the 2 days off after been sick although I understand why they have to do it.

Fingers crossed then that by the time we get to March DD wont need any more time off. She seems to be picking up everything at the moment.

10 days classes as 20 sessions so yeah that will be alot, would have knocked her attendance down below what the like them to have. i should imagine if she has much more time off they will want evidence of all illness and they will get someone in to see u about her attendance. DD had a few days off last school yr and they were houndin me over them, and it was only about 5. said if it dropped any more i would have to see someone and explain y and they would do home visits everytime i rang her in sick etc. They havent as not needed to. but they do watch her attendance closely. I know ur dd not even 5 yet but because u have put her in school they say u have to abid by the laws no matter if she was 4 or 14. Hth ps u cant help if the kids are ill and they do get a bit silly over it all to be honest. Hope ur dd feelin better soon x

How does that work then, what I mean is how does 19 absences - 9.5 days, :-? :giggle: or is that me being me again and not getting it!
If they are ill then there really is nothing you can do about it. Anna is off today for the first time since Aug and K had a day off last week again the first since Aug. Things like the "I have a sore tummy//head" etc we tend to ignore as once they get to school they are fine, if they are vomiting then no way would they be in, we are all ill now because a class member was sent to school ill
When you say 10 days is that since she started in Sept? It is a fair amount but like I said if she is ill then what can you do :D

ETA crossed posts
ETA again, DH's cousins DS got 100% attendance even though he had the 10 days off they are "allowed" shocking imo, but I think we are a bit stricter up here with that sort of thing

For every 1 day off iill is 2 sessions at school as they class mornin n afternoon as 2 different school times so 19 would count as 9.5 etc if that makes sence

my Ds was terrible at nursery too and with every cold he seemed to get an ear infection which lead to more time off. This year his immune system seems much better and he's only had the odd sniffle which if got over no prob. Hopefully next year she won't be as bad. My Dd and Ds2 were also catching loads last year due to Ds1 bringing everything home so maybe by the time they are in school they won't get much either.

Eta they get 2 marks per day morning and afternoon. If he brightened up for example by 11am I'd send him for the afternoon so he'd only get one mark rather than 2.
