Christian school for non religious family?

Postby anothersquish » Sun Jun 19, 2011 6:21 pm

Im again seriously rethinking Cs schooling. I had wanted to Home Ed him but my health just will not allow at the moment, most days I am not well enough to take him anywhere and it wouldnt be fair so I have gone back to looking at different schools.

This particular school is fairly heavily Christian, they say they have about 50/50 christian/non christian and they seem very nice and not too pushy about it (whilst trying to 'sell' me the school!!) Its a very small private school, there are fees to pay BUT I would pay very little due to being a reg disabled single parent. They have the best GCSE results in the borough, very small classes, one or two teaching assistants in every class and so on and so forth.
The one thing I am cautious of is the religion thing. I am not religious, I respect those who have religions they follow (to a point, I am anti those factions that promote hatred of any other group of people) I am a little concerned over what this school teaches in the way of evolution and biology...this is something I would address and question whilst visiting...however its really how hypocritical it would be of me to be very non religious and send my child to an obviously heavily Christian school.
I want him to have the best education I can provide for him! I have lost all confidence in his current school what with bullying, teacher and pupil attitudes, asking for money on less than a days notice, misspelling words in letters (may seem petty but it all adds up!) and also their attitude towards my sons learning. He is advanced in mathematics and can finish the work assigned to him in a fraction of the time others do...of course he gets bored and starts chatting/messing and instead of giving him more work to do he gets shouted at....its destroying his love of learning..any 6/7 yr old is going to get bored if they have to sit for 30+ minutes quietly with nothing to do waiting for everyone else to catch up.

Would it be wrong of me to send him? He will openly tell people he doesnt believe god exsists, he gives rational and pretty damn good reasons as to why he believes this and I would want his opinion respected by the school. I am happy for him to be taught ABOUT christianity along with as many other religions as possible as I think its very important for children to learn about and respect other peoples beliefs and the way to do this is understanding and knowledge of them....I just dont want it to be taught as "truth" IYSWIM? This is really what makes me wonder if I have any place considering the school...eek! What to do??!!

Edited to say: Another bonus for this school is that its from Nursery to 16yrs...no changing of school and resettling...big plus point IMO.

With the area i live in, my only option is a Catholic school- i am soooo not religious, but mine will go there as it's a lovely school!!

I wen't to C of E schools & it certainly didn't make me want to take up religion!!

I don't think it would be wrong of you- you're not denying religion, just not accepting one as it!!

I will continue to teach mine what i feel & let them learn about all religion.... I do struggle with the thought of prayers etc, but he's very strong in himself so i don't worry too much!!

Sorry garbled, a bit tired :giggle:

I am going to view a Catholic Nursery/School on Tuesday as its our closet school with good results. So am very interested in this thread . I also feel apprehensive about the religious aspects and
I am a little concerned over what this school teaches in the way of evolution and biology...
this as well.
I also feel hypocritical , we are unmarried and DP doesn't believe / we don't attend a church.
Eager for replies.

i think it just depends on what you feel comfortable with.

ds will be going to a state school but i feel extremely uncomfortable with their interpretation of the law that says there must be daily collective worship. their policy describes the children sitting with eyes closed, hands on knees, thinking about s particular theme and finishing by simultaneously saying a particular word. so in my eyes it's prayer in all but name, and i'm not happy about it (other schools locally use the time to think about how to be nice and look after others etc). if i wanted him to learn to pray i'd take him to church. i will be hassling the school about it at the parents meeting this coming week.

but that obviously would be much worse in a religious school. so if you're comfortable with that then i don't think it matters. i *think* they have to teach evolution, don't they? but i suppose it depends on how they phrase it in the actual class, which you'll never know before the time

As its a private school they can teach as much creationism as they like, the impression I have so far is that they are fairly balanced, they do not just teach about christianity but other cultures and religions and as they have very good examination results they have to teach points of evolution (though Darwins theory is flawed anyway but thats another convo!) and correct biology. If I decide to go visit I will be asking to listen to a bit of some classes and specifically questioning how they teach evolution (ie how much they lean on creationism)

Our children got to a Roman Catholic school and we are non RC, doesn't bother, them or us, the school are fine as well, they do have a the view (well a couple of members of the pta do) that if you want your non rc kids to go to a rc school don't moan about it and I agree, I love the good moral education our kids are getting. We chose it as it is the best school of the 3 in the village x

Flexi-schooling is not a legal right, the head teacher (not the LA) have to agree to it, but you can send him part-time to school.

You would agree regular days/times with the school - for example, Monday to Wednesday only or Monday to Friday half day etc. He would still have to follow the curriculum and sit the same tests and exams but you are pretty much free to do what you want in your time. If he's bright he will probably be so far ahead anyway that he won't be missing anything at school.

That way he gets the opportunity to be out of the house and you can still HE and do your own thing in your time with him. You can always change your mind and go to full HE or full school in the future. Whatever suits you both.
