Gifted and Talented register.

Postby tracedw » Sat Nov 19, 2011 11:15 am

What does it mean in your school? what extra stuff do they do and what if any thing does it really mean?
Tadhg is in year 3 and his class teacher (who also is in charge of the G&T list) informed me yesterday that they would like to put him on their list, not for any particular subject he is just generally a very bright and able student and gets top marks for just about every subject.
Whilst i am very proud that he is doing so well i dont really know what this means as far as his education goes.
He goes to a private school and the register is for the kids from year 3 and up and there is no quota either like in state schools where i believe 10% of each class , usually 3 kids, are put on the list.
He does extension work for most lessons and has another book called The Brain Academy which him and another girl in his year work through.
Also Friday lunchtime a invited speaker comes to speak on a subject (yesterdays was a war journalist)and then there is a discussion after, this is just for certain interested g &t kids.
Just wondered really what does your school do ?

Still trying to work out what it means in our school. DS has just started reception, and his teacher wants to put him on there and has admitted that he doesn't know what to do with him so he needs to ask advice from others. The problem with us is that they don't seem to assess reception children until the end of the school year, so never have reception kids on the G&T register. So it's new ground for both the school and for us.

His is just an infant school, so R-Yr 2, it might perhaps be treated differently in an all-through primary. His is a state school.

That's shocking.

I suspect this is where we'll end up though. They've already said they don't want to give him Yr 2 work because that will then cause problems for the teacher when he's in Year 1 and 2. So they want to extend him 'sideways'. How can you 'extend sideways' when they want reception kids to count to 10, and he's doing multiplication, division, subtraction down to negative numbers. I'm giving them until the end of the school year, and if they're not giving him appropriate work I'll be seriously considering homeschooling.

Thats shocking and not helpful to your son, he must get bored in class.
What is the point of having a G&T list if you are not prepared to extend/encourage the kids on it.

We spoke to his teacher and he said print sheets of the Internet

But with his homework this week, the whole class couldnt do it, and he went over it again in another lesson. DS did his alone (with us watching in 5 minutes..) I worry soon hel just get plain bored in lessons :-? His teacher last year was lovely and took an hr out of her own time after school once a week to do harder work with him. Ds2 has her this year (yr2) and has the same mathematical ability so I'm thinking il ask her if she minds if he comes too.

Ds1 is on the register for maths, he's in year 3 and what they do is give him work from year 4 and 5 which he is happy with. They also have sent home a password for him to use one of the websites he uses at school which he loves, he's computer mad. His teacher did suggest trying to find an activity outside of school to challenge him more with maths but there isn't anything like that round here. tbh I don't want him doing too much, I want him to enjoy his chIldhood, he seems to be happy with the current situation so don't see any reason to push him any further for the time being.

Harmony is in the gifted and talented program is secondary, she's yr 7 and for her it means she has the chance to do an extra language which is Latin. She's in one of the top classes in her year group and 60 girls are in the program in her year group.

It didn't mean anything in primary, she was in the top classes for Maths and literacy and that was it.

Is there no way he can go into the older class for Maths? I know we've done that in the past with particularly able children. The child just joins up with the other class for that one subject. It does mean some timetabling issues but at least the children are working at an appropriate level and are being challenged. He shouldn't have to 'coast' with sideways work for the next couple of years until his classmates catch up. :-?
