Flexitots and another use?

Postby monkeypickle » Tue Mar 06, 2012 7:59 am

Sorry for the random question but we used flexitots (totsbots) for DD2 and I am wondering if any one knows if they are generally considered okay to use again for another child. I tried them on DD3 but they don't seem to be holding well and she is very wet. I wasn't sure if it was her being just a wet baby or whether the nappies are just past their best. Disposables don't make me think she is particularly wet so I am wondering whether I need to reinvest in another set of cloth nappies.

Thank you for any wise words :D

Sorry seriously though I have no idea having never used them, I do have one random one upstairs that was part of the trial kit I use to have for loans but never tried it myself x

I used the 1 or 2 flexitots I had on James & Eleanor with no trouble.
If I remember correctly I'm sure one of them was preloved when I got it!

Have you changed washing routine? Powder buildup? Might be worth a strip to see if that improves them if it's a long time since it was last done?

Would you explain your washing routine to us please? What detergent do you use & how much of it? What washing cycles do you use? Sounds like it might be a case of them need to be stripped.

You might also need to use a booster. Your second child might be a bit heavier of a wetter.

Thanks ladies. How do you strip nappies :-? I have no idea, sorry!

Washing routine is 40 degrees with nappy soak stuff (can't remember the name of it). I also use the washing balls. That is so vague, sorry!

They were used relatively recently, up until October. I had to put DD2 into disposables as she has toddler diarrhoea. Was very cheesed off but had no choice sadly.

Another stash is tempting as they are not my favourite nappy. Tried a bum genius this morning (nabbed from my sis) and that did seem a little better. So trying to be practical though!

Thanks so much for your helpful replies and advice. I am a bit hopeless I know. :giggle:

Do you prewash the nappies at all? Do an extra rinse at the end of the wash? If you have never stripped your nappies they are well due one. You will hopefully notice a difference in absorbency afterwards.
The best way to wash nappies is a cold prewash with no detergent followed by either a 40 or 60 degree wash with (depending on how soft/hard your water is) anywhere between 1 tablespoon up to half recommended dose of biological washing powder followed by an extra rinse cycle to ensure that all detergent is rinsed from nappies & inserts. Washing powder is better than liquids & gels as they cause more build up.

To strip wash, do a cold wash with a full dose of washing detergent, then do a 60 degree wash with no detergent. Then do several extra rinse cycles.
For more info read this thread viewtopic.php?f=19&t=23823

Then do a maintenance wash on the machine as outlined in the thread linked to clear the machine of any build up.

Thank you Monstrem. I really appreciate that advice and help. I have never heard of stripping nappies to be honest. I am sure mine are due this then! I will give it a go and fingers crossed they seem be more absorbent.

Thank you so much again. I did also notice what you said about a booster for DD3.
