Prefold for hard water - please recommend good brands!

Postby enola » Mon May 02, 2011 5:41 pm

Hi there!

So...I've got a few wooly things on the way, and though I have a few fitteds I also have some very nice Thirsties Duo Hemp prefolds. My first question is - how would I nippa them, and would they fit my chunky monkey (can you recommend a good fold for older boys, please?).

I really want to use prefolds with wool, so I'm guessing I'd have to nippa them?
We have extremely hard water, so anything terry goes rather stiff - bamboo and OBV stay relatively soft, and this hemp jersey has worked well, too.

So, please could you share your recommendations of the best of the best prefolds over the size ranges that will wash without turning super-crispy on me, please? :D

Thank you!

I'd say stick with thirsties or if you can :sewing: get some bamboo fleece to make some as they can be nippared but velour can't :D
Not much help I use thirsties home made bamboo fleece and Eco earth bamboo velour and owe whoa when ones which are velour too but they do Terry as well,

Have you tried soy french terry? Stays much softer in 'our' type of water.
Bamboo fleece as mentioned is a good one, you can layer it up or just layer the centre so it stays trimmer around the waist.
You will want big flat squares if you want them to fit both NB and Daniel rather than prefolds which generally come sized.

Fab stuff -thanks so much ladies!
Squish, you have given me a fantastic idea - to post in the WAHM section asking if anyone would be interested in making me up a sample of a large square in soy french terry backed with OBV or something lush, and dyed up pretty. Then, all being well, I'd buy many more :D

haha, you just have to watch with OBV as you cant nippa it, you need to either use pins or a PUL wrap to hold it firmly so it doesnt slip.
I have just finished making up my own and havent any left atm else Id offer to make you one up! I did half a dozen newborn size and half a dozen small size and dyed them all different colours...I cant help myself!!

Oooh *jealous* Would the OBV be OK as a liner of sorts, though (although I'd be using a liner as well, I'm thinking it would be nice round the legs etc. and then the outer as that soy stuff. What did you use, please?
I wish you had some left - t'would be fab to have you make them, then some bandana bibs and clothes could accidentally fall into my cart too :D haha x

I do plan to order more as Ive had a fair few people ask about prefolds recently, just be a couple of weeks before I have the fabric again!
You could use the OBV on the inside if you plan to do a typical trifold with the wings pulled out at the back as the outer would be all Terry and nippa-able.
The ones Ive done are actually pretty much the above with the centre section having bamboo fleece layers so they are very absorbent but because they are sized prefolds they arent bulky...well...I say that but I dont know as I havent put them on a newborn yet!!!
